President-elect John Dramani Mahama has expressed optimism about Ghana’s democratic stability following his massive victory in the December 7 presidential elections.
In a social media post on Wednesday, December 11, Mr. Mahama disclosed that he had met outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House to initiate the transition process.
“We can be sure that our democracy is safe, and by working together across bipartisan lines, we can continue to deepen and consolidate it,” he said.
“We had a cordial meeting, and the President briefed me on security and the economy. Later today, we will inaugurate the Joint Transition Team,” the President-elect further wrote.
The meeting comes days after President Akufo-Addo extended a congratulatory call to Mr. Mahama, a gesture the latter lauded as a “mark of statesmanship.”
“I expressed my sincerest appreciation to the President for his phone call on Monday to congratulate me. It was a good mark of statesmanship, giving me a sense of déjà vu,” Mr. Mahama added.
He further commended Ghanaians for their resilience and commitment to the democratic process, highlighting the peaceful conduct of the elections as a testament to the nation’s democratic maturity.
“Democracy and Ghana are the winners following the electoral process. Despite all the anxieties people had ahead of the election and voting day, Ghana has done it again,” he remarked.
The Joint Transition Team, which will oversee the smooth transfer of power, is set to be inaugurated later today.
