Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on party members to reflect on their values and focus on renewal following their defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 10, the former Energy Minister described the party’s loss as a “storm” that offers an opportunity for introspection and growth.
“It is not every storm that comes to destroy. Some come to clear the path and its obstructive underbrush, and the quiet after the storm allows for the renewal and regeneration of spirit and form,” he said.
The NPP lost the presidential race to former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who garnered 56.55% of the votes in the December 7 election.
The defeat has sparked discussions within the ruling party, with many calling for changes in leadership and strategy ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Mr. Agyarko noted that the loss should serve as a wake-up call for the party to realign with its core principles.
“The verdict of a justifiably angered nation has been visited upon us. We have heard it loud and clear. We have been duly chastened. Now is the time for sober reflection,” he remarked.
He urged party members to remain calm, united, and focused on rebuilding the party’s strength, stating, “Yes, our present predicament is going to be very trying but clarifying, and we must and shall rise to the occasion of renewing our party.”
The NPP’s defeat follows a contentious campaign season marked by economic challenges and public dissatisfaction with governance.
