The election of John Dramani Mahama as president in the 2024 elections has stirred mixed reactions across Ghana, with some citizens expressing disappointment over the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
While many celebrated Mahama’s decisive victory, others voiced their disapproval and concerns about the future under his leadership.
Some feared that his return could lead to the cancellation of key policies, such as the Free SHS program, and further economic challenges.
Speaking to ModernGhana News, a concerned citizen who dismissed claims of hardship under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration and praised his leadership for advancing the nation.
“I am saddened because Nana Akufo-Addo and his government progressed the country and made it prosperous.
“There is no truth to the claims by some Ghanaians that there is hardship in the country. What did Mahama do when he was the former president?” the individual remarked.
The citizens expressed optimism about the NPP’s ability to stage a strong comeback in the next elections.
“I strongly know that in the next four years, 'it will be possible,' and we will stage a strong comeback,” they confidently stated.
Another Ghanaian, who also hoped for a continuation of NPP policies under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urged Mahama to preserve and build on the legacy of the Free SHS program.
“I was looking forward to Bawumia winning because of the Free SHS. I have kids, and all that I hope is for him not to cancel it,” she said.
