The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has issued a strong call to labor unions within state organizations to remain vigilant and safeguard state properties during the transition following the 2024 general elections.

The GFL raised concerns that the shift from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) may lead to attempts by corrupt officials to destroy state documents to conceal evidence of wrongdoing.

In an interview in Tema, GFL Secretary General Mr. Abraham Koomson urged workers to closely monitor politically exposed individuals, particularly Chief Executive Officers and accounting officials, to prevent tampering with state properties and records.

He also warned against politically motivated fire outbreaks or other deliberate acts intended to destroy documents and cover up corrupt activities.

"This period demands heightened vigilance from all labor unions to ensure state resources and records are preserved," Mr. Koomson stated, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability during the transition.

The GFL reiterated its commitment to good governance, reminding unions of their role in promoting responsible management of state resources. This call aligns with the federation’s earlier declaration of 2024 as an "action year" for labor, aimed at empowering workers to demand their rights and fight against unfair labor practices.

Mr. Koomson also underscored the significance of unity within Ghana's labor front, citing the Labour Act 2003 as a tool for protecting workers from exploitation and ensuring fair treatment in workplaces.

The Secretary General condemned recent reports of political foot soldiers looting and destroying state properties in the wake of the elections. “Such acts are criminally motivated,” he stated, urging law enforcement agencies to investigate and apprehend those responsible for these attacks on public institutions.

As Ghana embarks on this new chapter, the GFL’s call to safeguard state properties and maintain transparency serves as a critical reminder of the need for accountability and responsible governance. The federation’s vigilance and advocacy will be instrumental in protecting the nation’s interests during this transitional period.
