The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disclosed that an outstanding debt of GH¢18 million from the Ministry of Education (MoE) is hindering the completion of post-examination processes for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In a press release issued on Monday, December 9, WAEC noted that the marking of essays and practical components, which began on November 7 and ended on November 29, has been completed.

However, the scanning of objective answer sheets remains unfinished due to technical challenges.

“The scanning of the objective cards, scheduled for November 1 to November 30, 2024, is yet to be completed due to the breakdown of scanners used for the process,” the statement read.

WAEC attributed the delay to the lack of funds needed for repairs, stating that it awaits a portion of the GH¢118 million owed by the ministry to resolve the issue.

“The Council is awaiting the release of additional funds out of the outstanding balance of GH¢118,000,000.00 from the Ministry of Education for the repair of the scanners to enable the scanning process and other post-examination processes to continue smoothly,” the statement noted.

WAEC further appealed to examination officials and suppliers to remain patient as payments for their services would be made upon receipt of the necessary funds.

Meanwhile, WAEC has cautioned the public against paying attention to unverified information circulating on social media regarding the release of results.

“Members of the public are urged to ignore information circulating on social media purporting to be dates for the release of results,” the Council emphasized, adding that results would only be made available once the challenges are resolved.
