Senior Political Science professor at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has called for an urgent overhaul of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
Prof. Gyampo believes that the party must be rescued from the influence of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his associates to rebuild and return to its ideological roots.
In a Facebook post, the outspoken academic opined that the NPP’s loss was self-inflicted and warned that it could lead to the party’s downfall if urgent reforms are not undertaken.
“This is a potential decimation of the NPP. It was caused by themselves. Let the party be rescued from the claws of Akufo-Addo and his remnants, and let the entire National Executives be overhauled to restore the party to its tradition,” he remarked.
The comments follow the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as President-elect by the Electoral Commission on Monday, December 9.
Announcing the results, Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa disclosed that John Mahama secured victory with 56.55% of the valid votes cast. She emphasised that the results were conclusive, even if all votes from the remaining nine constituencies were added to the second-placed candidate.
Jean Mensa stated, “We have collated the results from all 16 regions. The Presidential result from 267 constituencies clearly establishes the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election. Even if all votes from nine constituencies are added to the candidate who placed second, it will not change the outcome of the election. In the light of the above, I have the singular honour to declare H.E John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election with a total percentage of 56.55%.”
