‘I thank God for preparing a table before me in the presence of my enemies’ – Mahama

Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed gratitude to God and Ghanaians for his decisive victory in the 2024 presidential election.

Speaking during his victory address on Monday, December 9, Mahama reflected on his triumph, quoting Psalm 23:5:

“I thank God for preparing a table before me in the presence of my enemies. And for anointing my head with oil and making my cup run over," John Dramani Mahama said.

Mahama in his victory speech also extended his gratitude to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for demonstrating statesmanship by conceding defeat even before the official announcement.

“This successful outcome can only be the doing of the Lord. I like to thank Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his statesmanship in conceding defeat long before the announcement of the result by the Electoral Commission,” Mahama said.

The President-elect acknowledged a congratulatory message from outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He confirmed that the two leaders have agreed to commence a smooth transition process starting December 11.

The Electoral Commission on Monday officially declared Mahama the winner with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast.

The victory was met with widespread celebration among supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
