Former President John Dramani Mahama has been declared the winner of Ghana's 2024 presidential election, securing 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast.
The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) defeated his closest rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), by a margin of 1,671,093 votes. Dr. Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes, which translates to 41.61% of the valid votes.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, officially declared Mr. Mahama as the President-elect in a televised address on Monday, December 9. The announcement followed the collation of results from 267 out of 276 constituencies, with nine constituencies outstanding due to delays.
Independent candidate Nana Kwame Bediako of the New Force Party placed third, securing 84,478 votes (0.5%), while Alan Kyerematen, running independently under the Movement for Change, came fourth with 31,202 votes (0.28%).
Election Statistics
The total number of valid votes cast was 11,191,422, out of 11,435,531 total votes cast, with 239,109 votes rejected. Ghana’s voter turnout for the 2024 general elections stood at 60.9%, based on a registered voter population of 18,774,159.
Outstanding Constituencies
Jean Mensa clarified that results from nine constituencies—Dome-Kwabenya, Suhum, Akwatia, Ablekuma North, Awutu Senya East, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Techiman South, Ahafo Ano North and Damongo—remain outstanding. This delay was attributed to disruptions caused by political party supporters at some collation centers, making it impossible to complete the collation process.
The EC Chairperson assured Ghanaians that the presidential results would be updated as and when the remaining results are received.
