John Dumelo, the Member of Parliament-elect for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has pledged to hit the ground running in addressing the pressing needs of his constituents.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based JoyNews on Monday, December 9, the NDC candidate underscored the urgency of delivering results within the next four years to secure the trust of voters.
“For me, four years is not that far; it’s pretty much like a day after tomorrow. If I don’t start working now, four years will come, and I’ll realize that nothing has been done,” Dumelo said.
Acknowledging the mixed demographic of his constituency, which comprises students, long-time residents, and squatters, he emphasized the importance of addressing their diverse concerns.
“Ayawaso West has more than half of its population being students because of the seven or eight tertiary institutions in the area. But there are also people who have lived here for 10, 20, or 30 years, as well as squatters. Each group has its own concerns,” he explained.
He added that despite perceptions of Ayawaso West Wuogon being well-developed, there remain significant infrastructural gaps, including poor road conditions, lack of water in some areas, and inadequate street lighting.
“Some people might say it’s one of the most developed constituencies, but it’s really not. We still have roads to fix, areas without water, and several dark streets that need lighting. There’s a lot to be done,” he noted.
Dumelo attributed his victory to relentless hard work, including door-to-door campaigning over the past year, and recognized the responsibility that comes with the mandate.
“I’ve learned that you don’t take the people for granted. They voted us in, and when you get there, you must represent them well. If I don’t do my work well in four years, they will vote me out based on my track record,” he stressed.
