Elections #Election2024: NPP smelling defeat; resorting to frivolous allegations – NDC
SAT, 07 DEC 2024

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected calls by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the prosecution of an Electoral Commission officer arrested in Kintampo South for alleged electoral misconduct.

NDC described the NPP's demands as baseless and a diversionary tactic intended to incite tension and distract attention from the ongoing electoral process.

The controversy stems from the arrest of Joseph Dery, an officer of the Electoral Commission, who is accused of issuing ballot papers that omitted the photo of the first presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to voters.

This alleged act of misconduct quickly became a flashpoint in the election in Kintampo South, sparking outrage among NPP supporters, who viewed it as a deliberate attempt to manipulate the outcome of the polls.

According to the police, Dery was apprehended after party agents and vigilant polling station officials noticed irregularities in the ballot papers.

The matter was immediately reported, leading to his arrest and the confiscation of the suspect ballot materials.

At a press conference, Denis Miracles Aboagye, a spokesperson for the Dr. Bawumia campaign, demanded the immediate prosecution of Joseph Dery.

The party accused the EC officer of engaging in deliberate actions to disenfranchise voters and undermine the democratic process.

In a swift rebuttal, the NDC dismissed the NPP's allegations and their demand for prosecution as baseless.

Speaking at a press conference, National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi accused the NPP of using the incident to distract from their anticipated electoral defeat.

Gyamfi insisted that the alleged misconduct was the responsibility of the Electoral Commission and not the NDC.

He argued that the NPP’s focus should be on ensuring transparency through lawful means, rather than spreading unfounded accusations against their political opponents.

“The NPP has resorted to frivolous allegations because they can smell defeat coming, and so they have resorted to all manner of frivolous allegations just to incite their hooligans and their thugs to engage in violence and manipulate the electoral process.”

“This was not done by the NDC but by an Electoral Commission officer, and so if anybody ought to be blamed, it should be the EC and not the EC.”
