An official of the Electoral Commission (EC) has been arrested in the Kintampo South constituency of the Bono East Region for alleged electoral offences.
According to a statement by the Ghana Police Service on Saturday, December 7, the suspect, identified as Dery Joseph, is accused of issuing about 15 ballot papers to voters that omitted the image of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, at the Ampesika-Bayere polling station.
“The suspect, Dery Joseph, is under investigation for issuing about 15 ballot papers to voters that omitted the first presidential candidate,” the police disclosed in the statement.
The Ghana Police Service assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter while urging citizens to remain calm as the voting process continues.
“We are committed to ensuring the integrity of the ongoing electoral process. Investigations are ongoing, and we urge everyone to report any irregularities promptly,” the statement noted.
The Electoral Commission has yet to comment on the incident, which comes amidst widespread reports of a largely peaceful election process nationwide.
