The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has reiterated the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections devoid of bias or interference.

She stressed that the EC’s role is not to determine political outcomes but to ensure that the electoral process reflects the will of the people.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, December 6, Mrs. Mensa charged all election officials to uphold professionalism, fairness, and transparency in the discharge of their duties as the nation prepares for the crucial 2024 general elections.

“Our collective roles – yours and ours – is not to make anybody a president or a member of parliament,” she emphasized. “Ours is to conduct orderly, credible, fair, and highly professional elections.”

Mrs. Mensa urged election officials to follow the guidelines and training provided by the Commission, highlighting the importance of accurate vote counting and proper documentation at polling stations.

“Your work at the polling stations, which culminates in the pink sheets, is what determines the outcome of the election. We urge you to do it with integrity and truth, and let God’s light guide you,” she stated.

She also called on officials to ensure that all votes are treated fairly and that valid votes are not erroneously classified as rejected ballots.

“We trust in you to deliver free, fair, credible, and transparent elections that will reflect the will of the people as expressed at the polls,” she said.

The EC Chairperson concluded by affirming the Commission’s resolve to deliver elections that meet global standards.

She encouraged officials to execute their duties with integrity, adding that the Commission would assess the performance of all staff after the elections to ensure accountability.

“When all is said and done, the Commission will undertake an internal assessment to evaluate each and every one of us. Let us do our bit to ensure that we can pass the test and continue together as one big family, working to make elections in Ghana world-class,” she noted.
