The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has raised concern about the closure of Ghana’s borders just hours before the start of the main polls on December 7.
According to him, the closure is senseless and will disenfranchise many Ghanaians who live in border towns.
“Closure of borders doesn’t make sense at all. All of us know that Ghanaians in their thousands are residents in border towns. What is this closure meant to achieve? If I’m a Ghanaian living in Lome and I’m being blocked from coming to vote then I’m being disenfranchised. That is a big worry,” Kwesi Pratt Jnr said during a discussion on TV3.
The Ministry of the Interior on Friday evening announced a temporal closure of all land borders.
In the release signed by Interior Minister Henry Quartey, it said the closure is part of measures to ensure the integrity of the December 7 General Elections.
This temporary closure of Ghana’s land borders is with immediate effect and ends at 6:00 pm on Sunday, December 8.
“The Ministry urges all citizens, and travellers to and from Ghana, to cooperate with State Security Agencies enforcing this directive,” the Ministry of Interior press release said.
