The National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Yamin, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of unlawfully deploying 200 soldiers to constituencies within the Ashanti Region ahead of the December 7 general elections.
Addressing the press at the NDC Ashanti Regional Secretariat, Yamin alleged that these soldiers were transported overnight in unregistered vehicles to 34 constituencies in the region.
“The NPP wants to have the upper hand in the elections. They have deployed 200 men from Accra who have no legitimate role in tomorrow’s elections to various constituencies in the Ashanti Region,” Yamin claimed.
He further stated that the deployment appeared unofficial, as the soldiers were transported in private vehicles and accompanied by NPP officials, rather than being assigned through the Ghana Armed Forces.
“How were these soldiers brought to the Ashanti Region in private vehicles instead of military ones? Why are they being led by NPP officials? And why are they unaware of their purpose here?” Yamin questioned.
In response to concerns about military presence at polling stations, the Ghana Armed Forces issued a statement on Thursday, December 6, 2024, clarifying that no military personnel would be stationed at polling stations for the elections unless requested by the Ghana Police Service.
The allegations have heightened tensions as Ghana prepares to head to the polls, with stakeholders calling for transparency and adherence to electoral protocols to ensure a peaceful election process.
