The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured Ghanaians that the credibility of the Afadjato South election remains intact despite the actions of a District Electoral Officer who transported election materials in a private vehicle without a police escort.
In a press release dated December 6, 2024, the EC confirmed that the officer, stationed in the Afadjato South District of the Volta Region, was questioned by the Ghana Police Service over the breach of protocol.
The police subsequently seized the election materials for safekeeping.
“The policy of the Commission is for its Officers to transport all Election Materials in official vehicles with Police escort where necessary,” the statement read.
The EC assured the public that it has commenced internal investigations into the matter and will cooperate fully with the police in their ongoing probe.
The Commission emphasized that the officer’s actions, while a violation of policy, do not pose any threat to the integrity of the election in the constituency.
“Though the Officer breached the policy of the Commission, the actions of the Officer will not in any way compromise the elections in the Afadjato South Constituency,” the Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, stated.
The EC reiterated its commitment to conducting transparent, free, and fair elections across the country.
It also appealed to stakeholders to remain calm as measures are implemented to address the situation and prevent a recurrence.
