The Bawku Central in the Upper East Region recorded a massive turnout than expected in today's nationwide special voting exercise on Monday, October 2.

ModernGhana News gathered that out of the 526 voters, 405 voters turned out to cast their ballot representing 77 per cent.

The figure is considered as significant as many thought the frequent gun battles in the area would deter many from turning out to vote.

Earlier in the day, Bawku township experienced sporadic gunfire in some areas. However, the situation was brought under control thanks to the swift intervention of military personnel. Desperate voters in the area defied the deadly atmosphere and still turned out to cast their ballot.

The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Raymond Adofiem assured that gunfire incidents in the Bawku Municipality in the early hours of Monday won't be allowed to disrupt the special voting in the area.

According to him, adequate measures have been implemented to ensure that every eligible voter can exercise their franchise without hindrance.

Speaking during his visit to the Bawku Central Constituency as part of a tour to monitor the electoral process, DCOP Adofiem emphasized the commitment of security forces to maintain order.

He revealed plans to meet with parliamentary candidates from the Kusaug Traditional Area to discuss strategies for ensuring peace before, during, and after the elections.

“Drones have been deployed to areas affected by gunfire, and arrests will be made soon,” he disclosed. He also issued a strong warning to those involved in the shootings, urging them to desist or face the consequences of their actions.
