Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed plans to establish industries in Ghana to manufacture dialysis consumables and reagents.
This initiative aims to significantly reduce the cost of treating kidney disease in the country.
Speaking during a visit to the renal department of the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Prempeh announced that the government is already in discussions with international companies specializing in dialysis consumables to explore potential partnerships.
“The establishment of local industries for manufacturing dialysis consumables is a step towards making kidney treatment more affordable and accessible for all Ghanaians,” Dr. Prempeh stated.
He underscored the NPP government’s unwavering commitment to delivering quality healthcare services, pointing to the ambitious Agenda 111 project, which involves the construction of 111 hospitals across Ghana, as evidence of their dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure.
Dr. Prempeh also noted that the government plans to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to position Ghana as a hub for manufacturing first-class dialysis consumables.
This announcement follows the government’s recent rollout of free dialysis treatment for renal patients, which officially began on December 1, 2024. Dr. Prempeh described the initiative as a game-changer for healthcare access in Ghana.
“Our government remains committed to innovative solutions that address critical healthcare challenges, and this is yet another demonstration of our resolve to improve the lives of all Ghanaians,” he concluded.
