Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has disclosed that some members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have privately reached out to him, expressing concerns about the current economic hardship and urging him to work towards rescuing the country.
Speaking during his six-day tour of the Ashanti Region, Mr. Mahama revealed that these individuals, despite being part of the ruling government, have confided in him about their struggles under the Nana Addo-Bawumia administration. He added that many of them have encouraged his team to intensify their efforts to secure victory in the upcoming elections.
“They tell me, ‘Things are hard; please rescue us,’” Mahama stated, emphasizing that the call for change must be embraced by all Ghanaians as a collective effort.
The former president criticized the current government for what he described as its failure to fulfill promises and for dragging the country into economic despair. Comparing his administration to the NPP’s, Mahama remarked, “They promised Ghanaians heaven on earth, but what do we see today? Hell. Nana Addo once said we sit on gold, yet people are hungry.”
He also took aim at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who he accused of abandoning his economic responsibilities and focusing on digitization instead. “Dr. Bawumia, who was marketed as an economic Messiah, has disappeared. Now, he’s hiding behind digitization,” Mahama said.
The remarks were made during a campaign stop in Asante Mampong on the first day of Mahama’s regional tour. The tour also included visits to Ejura Sekyere-Dumase, Sekyere East, Afigya Kwabre South, Afigya Kwabre North, and Nsuta, where he engaged with residents and reiterated his commitment to restoring economic stability and improving livelihoods if elected.
Mahama’s tour of the region forms part of his broader campaign to rally support ahead of the December polls, as he seeks to unseat the incumbent government.
