MON, 02 DEC 2024

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law if elected president in the upcoming general elections.

The bill, which aims to prohibit LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, is currently awaiting approval by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. However, its progress has been delayed due to ongoing legal challenges regarding its constitutionality. The Supreme Court is expected to deliver its judgment on the matter on December 18.

Speaking at a worship service at the Philadelphia Church in Kumasi, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his support for the legislation and his commitment to implementing it once the legal hurdles are cleared.

"There are many policies or works that are not completed yet. And I know that when I come into power, I will do these works to make sure that everyone is happy," he stated.

He specifically highlighted the importance of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, saying, "There are some policies pending in Parliament which I know are very important to our father. One is the bill for the LGBTQ. When I come to power, I will sign it without hesitation."

Dr. Bawumia also mentioned the Anti-Witchcraft Bill, expressing his readiness to address that issue as well. "The second thing is the Anti-Witchcraft Bill," he added.

His remarks were met with enthusiasm from the congregation, further solidifying his stance on these contentious issues as central to his political agenda.
