The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Raymond Adofiem has assured that gunfire incidents in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East Region in the early hours of Monday, December 2 will not be allowed to disrupt the ongoing special voting in the area.
Earlier in the day, Bawku township experienced sporadic gunfire in some areas. However, the situation was brought under control thanks to the swift intervention of military personnel. Despite the gunshot, voters in the area still turned-up to cast their ballot.
According to him, adequate measures have been implemented to ensure that every eligible voter can exercise their franchise without hindrance.
Speaking during his visit to the Bawku Central Constituency as part of a tour to monitor the electoral process, DCOP Adofiem emphasized the commitment of security forces to maintain order.
He revealed plans to meet with parliamentary candidates from the Kusaug Traditional Area to discuss strategies for ensuring peace before, during, and after the elections.
“Drones have been deployed to areas affected by gunfire, and arrests will be made soon,” he disclosed. He also issued a strong warning to those involved in the shootings, urging them to desist or face the consequences of their actions.
In the Bawku Central Constituency, 526 special voters were expected to cast their ballots. By 1:50pm, 370 voters had successfully cast their ballots, with the process ongoing under heightened security.
DCOP Adofiem’s visit underscores the police's resolve to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for voters amid the challenges posed by ongoing tensions in the area.
