The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has called on the public to report individuals impersonating military personnel or wearing military-patterned attire at polling stations during the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
This directive is part of efforts to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
“We encourage the public to report any military personnel, individual(s) identifying themselves as GAF personnel, or any individual(s) wearing military-patterned attire/accoutrements found at any polling station,” GAF stated.
In a press release dated December 1, GAF clarified that no military personnel would be stationed at polling stations.
Election security, it said, remains the responsibility of the Ghana Police Service (GPS), with the military only playing a supportive role when officially requested by the police.
“GAF’s presence will be limited to standby support, with the primary responsibility for election security remaining with the Ghana Police Service,” the statement noted.
Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director-General of Public Relations for GAF, emphasized the importance of public cooperation to maintain peace and order.
He urged Ghanaians to exercise their civic duties responsibly and avoid actions that could disrupt the electoral process.
“GAF wishes to encourage all Ghanaians to exercise their civic rights responsibly, cooperate with security personnel, and refrain from any acts that could disrupt the peace,” Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie said.
