The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has assured the public that no military personnel will be stationed at polling stations during the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
This assurance, issued in a press release on December 1, forms part of efforts to ensure a peaceful and credible election.
According to GAF, the responsibility for election security will primarily rest with the Ghana Police Service (GPS).
The military’s role will remain supportive, stepping in only when requested by the police.
“GAF’s presence will be limited to standby support, with the primary responsibility for election security remaining with the Ghana Police Service,” the statement emphasized.
The military’s clarification comes amidst heightened political tensions and concerns about the potential misuse of security forces to influence election outcomes.
To prevent impersonation and maintain order, GAF urged the public to report any unauthorized individuals claiming to be military personnel at polling stations.
“We encourage the public to report any military personnel, individual(s) identifying themselves as GAF personnel, or any individual(s) wearing military-patterned attire/accoutrements found at any polling station to the nearest Police Station,” the statement read.
