Prophet Kofi Oduro, founder of Alabaster International Ministries, has strongly criticized Oheneba Nana Asiedu, an aide to Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) and a presenter on Wontumi Radio/TV, for spreading false information about Ghana's 2024 elections.
In a video addressing his congregation, Prophet Oduro described the Oheneba's conduct as "nonsense," warning against the dangers of misleading the public.
“Someone has been arrested for spreading false news,” Prophet Oduro stated. “The person claimed that the elections would be held on different days.
“What kind of nonsense is this? Imagine an elderly woman in a village believing such things. That’s why the Bible says, ‘Let your words be seasoned with salt,’” he added.
This disinformation has sparked widespread condemnation, with Prophet Oduro calling for media accountability to prevent such incidents.
“Media presenters must understand the power of their words and ensure they are accurate. The public depends on them for credible information,” he emphasized.
Oheneba Nana Asiedu falsely claimed on his radio show that voting in the upcoming elections would occur on different days, suggesting that the first seven candidates, including the NPP's Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would be voted for on December 7, while the rest would follow on subsequent days.
He further suggested that individuals who failed to vote on that day would be barred from participating in subsequent rounds of voting.
Oheneba Nana Asiedu was taken into custody for allegedly violating Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which pertains to the publication of false news.
He has since been released on bail but is required to report periodically to the police as investigations continue.
The Ghana Police Service is investigating the intent behind the broadcast and its potential impact on public understanding of the electoral process.
