Founder of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has commented on former President John Agyekum Kufuor's endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The former President recently urged Ghanaians to vote for Dr. Bawumia, expressing confidence that the Vice President would bring about significant transformation if elected.
Kufuor’s endorsement comes as the nation gears up for a crucial election, and his support for the NPP flagbearer has sparked discussions across the political landscape.
According to Cudjoe, while Kufuor has every right to support a candidate of his choice, it is equally right for Ghanaians to question the reasoning behind his endorsement.
In a Facebook post on Monday, November 18, Franklin Cudjoe agreed that Kufuor’s backing of Dr. Bawumia is within his rights as a statesman. However, he emphasised that citizens also have the right to scrutinise the choice, particularly given the current economic challenges facing the country.
“President Kufuor has every right to choose anyone he wants to lead his party. He has a right to choose whoever he wants to lead Ghana at this crucial moment. Many of us also deserve to question the rationale behind his choices, especially if they are related to the pile of economic carnage and political chicanery that have landed us into our current atrophy and international ridicule,” Franklin Cudjoe remarked.
The IMANI Africa founder did not hold back in questioning Kufuor's silence during what he described as a period of economic mismanagement under President Nana Akufo-Addo and his Vice President, Dr. Bawumia.
“Where was President Kufuor's voice when defenceless and frail old men and women had to queue under the scorching sun to beg Nana & Bawumia's government to hands off their savings and miserable pension contributions? And yet they were given dreadful financial haircuts, sending almost 900 of these senior citizens prematurely to their graves?” Cudjoe lamented.
In his post, Franklin Cudjoe highlighted what he sees as the failures of the current administration. He accused the economic management team, led by Bawumia, of driving the country into significant debt which has led to severe financial losses for citizens.
He stated, “Perhaps President Kufuor needs to be reminded that his successor President, Nana Addo, and his 'solid' economic management team headed by Bawumia junketed our economy, drove us into a mighty debt iceberg, literally pickpocketed savings of innocent and defenceless senior citizens against their will, gave the rest of us ugly financial haircuts, and finally supervised the worst ecological homicide through illegal mining.”
Despite his criticism, Franklin Cudjoe urged President Kufuor to rather encourage all Ghanaians to make wise and peaceful choices in the December 7 polls.
