The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for its inability to address the challenges of the double-track system in secondary schools.

Speaking at Gbiniyiri in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Constituency to commence her campaign tour of the Savannah Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang argued that the current government lacks concrete solutions to the issues plaguing the system, which was introduced as part of the Free Senior High School policy.

“The Education Minister’s statement is a confirmation that the government has no solution to the challenges bedevilling the double-track system in secondary schools,” she remarked, referring to recent comments by Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum cautioning against the immediate abolition of the system.

Dr. Adutwum warned that removing the double-track system without proper planning could jeopardise the future of students.

However, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang countered that the NDC has a well-thought-out plan to phase it out while addressing its root causes.

“Unlike the NPP, the NDC has thought through the challenges of the double-track system and would roll out interventions, including the expansion of school infrastructure, to address them,” she said.

Drawing on her tenure as Education Minister, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted that the NDC had successfully abolished the shift system at the basic school level and was committed to doing the same for senior high schools.

She further criticised the NPP government for what she described as the collapse of the education sector but assured Ghanaians that the NDC has pragmatic solutions to fix the issues.

“There is hope for secondary education, especially as the NDC has pragmatic measures to fix the mess created by the government,” she added.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged voters to support the NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, and NDC parliamentary candidates in the upcoming December 7 general elections, promising that the party’s leadership would bring transformative change to the education system.
