Market queens in Kumasi have publicly pledged their support for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the December 7 elections, referencing significant improvements in their communities under the President Akufo-Addo.
The leaders emphasized the positive impact of initiatives such as the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program and improved electricity stability as key reasons for their endorsement.
The endorsement came during a visit by Francis Asenso-Boakye, Bantama MP and Minister for Roads and Highways, who met with the market queens to brief them on the upcoming campaign visit by NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking on behalf of the market women, Nana Yaa Fowaa, the queen mother of Central Market, commended the government’s commitment to community development through investments in roads, healthcare, digitalization, and especially Free SHS, which she noted has relieved families of financial strain and expanded opportunities for their children.
“Gone are the days when we had to sell our valuables, even our clothes, to pay school fees for our children. The Free SHS programme has lifted a heavy burden off our shoulders, providing much-needed financial relief and unlocking new opportunities for our children,” she said.
Nana Yaa Fowaa also recounted the painful frequent power outages before 2017, describing how she used to call home to check for electricity before returning.
“Today, thanks to the government’s visionary leadership, we no longer face those constant blackouts,” she added.
The market queens vowed to back the NPP’s vision for development, committing to close the market on election day to encourage a strong turnout in support of the government’s agenda.
