Dismissed Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs, has alleged a covert agenda behind Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s recent declaration of four vacant seats.
Jacobs claims the move is part of a broader strategy by the NDC to destabilize the government ahead of the December 7, 2024 elections.
Speaking on Peace FM’s "Kokrokoo" morning show, Allotey Jacobs indicated that the decision to declare the seats vacant was not just a procedural matter but a calculated effort by opposition forces to provoke agitation among the populace.
"There is something underneath this decision that has been taken by the Speaker of Parliament," he said.
He added,"There is a devil in it, and that devil is to use the Parliamentary system as a bullet to fire the current government… to create chaos and anarchy."
Despite the impasse, Allotey Jacobs, however, confidently predicted victory for New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserting that no political manoeuvring could prevent Bawumia’s win.
He emphasized, “No matter what happens on December 7, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be President. Ghanaians will reason, and if something untoward comes up, we shall speak against it.”
In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court, in a 5-2 decision led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, described Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of the seats as unconstitutional.
Following the verdict, Allotey Jacobs urged the Speaker to respect the ruling and reconvene Parliament to allow the continuation of government business, emphasizing the importance of stability as the country approaches a critical election.
