The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has assured Ghanaians of his unwavering commitment to maintaining peace as the country gears up for the 2024 general elections.
He made this pledge during a visit by the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), who called on him in Parliament to advocate for unity and stability during the election period.
The GNACOPS delegation, comprising teachers and pupils from selected private schools, was led by Obento Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, the National Executive Director of GNACOPS.
They urged the Speaker to use his influence at this crucial moment in Ghana's democratic journey to champion peace before, during, and after the elections. The delegation commended Speaker Bagbin for his outstanding contributions and for demonstrating to the youth that peaceful coexistence is a hallmark of a strong democratic society.
Speaker Alban Bagbin affirmed his dedication, stating, “I’m more than committed to the peace of this nation.”
He reassured GNACOPS and the public of his commitment to ensuring free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections. He highlighted the importance of fostering a peaceful atmosphere, noting that as part of the 30-year anniversary celebrations of Ghana’s parliamentary democracy, he had organized a seminar in Tamale.
The event brought together experts to emphasize the critical value of peace in society.
In his address, the Speaker also shared details about the Democracy Cup initiative, which uses the nation's love for football as a powerful medium to spread the message of peace.
“The foundation of life is peace,” Mr. Bagbin emphasised.
He applauded GNACOPS for their efforts in promoting peace and for instilling this vital message in young learners, recognising them as the future leaders of Ghana.
He expressed his gratitude, noting that their contribution adds significant momentum to the broader peace campaign ahead of the elections.
