Ghana’s oil industry is poised for a major boost as Sentuo Oil Refinery awaits parliamentary approval on crucial tax exemptions.

If approved, these exemptions will facilitate the expansion of the refinery’s production capacity from 40,000 to 100,000 barrels per day.

This was highlighted by Mr. Gabby Otchere-Darko, the Founder of the Africa Prosperity Network, during the official press launch of Africa Oil Week (AOW) 2025 in Accra on Wednesday, November 13.

Otchere-Darko emphasized the significance of enhancing local refinery capacities to support Ghana’s burgeoning oil industry and integrate the West African oil market.

He noted, “If Parliament will allow and pass the tax exemption that [Sentuo] is seeking for the second phase, which is supposed to come on board next year, [the refinery] will take it further to 100,000 barrels a day.”

The proposed expansion at Sentuo aligns with Ghana’s strategic aim to position itself as a central player in Africa’s oil and gas sector.

“What is also important is that we should use the opportunity deliberately to see how we can integrate the oil and gas sector on the continent in terms of the value chain,” he noted.

The potential scaling up of the Sentuo Oil Refinery is set against the backdrop of Africa Oil Week moving from Cape Town to Accra for the first time after 30 years.

The shift underscores Ghana’s evolving role as a commercial hub for the continent’s energy sector, attracting international and regional attention to its oil and gas assets.
