Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has come to the defense of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, arguing that it is unfair to hold him solely accountable for all the shortcomings of the ruling government.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Kufuor explained that as Vice President, Bawumia’s role is just to advise the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Kufuor emphasised that Bawumia has limited powers, suggesting that any failures in governance should be attributed primarily to the President, who is the chief decision-maker.
“Bawumia cannot be blamed for all happenings in government. He is just a deputy and an advisor to the president. The buck always stops with the president. All others are mere advisors. I will plead with Ghanaians to give Bawumia a chance,” John Agyekum Kufuor said.
In addition to defending Bawumia, the former President encouraged all eligible voters to participate in the December 2024 general elections, highlighting the importance of civic responsibility.
“I urge Ghanaians to vote for the party with the best track record. If you don't go out and vote, others will choose the leader you don't want for you,” ex-President Kufuor advised.
Kufuor’s remarks come as Bawumia faces scrutiny over the government’s performance, with many critics blaming the economic challenges on his poor leadership as the head of the Economic Management Team.
The former President’s endorsement could bolster Bawumia’s campaign efforts as he seeks to become the next President of Ghana.
