The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) is outraged by recent remarks from NDC National Chairman, Mr Asiedu Nketia, who shockingly proposed the cancellation of Free Senior High School (Free SHS) should the NDC return to power. His justification? An absurd claim is that the NPP benefits from “kickbacks” when implementing free policies. Such reckless and thoughtless comments are an insult to the millions of Ghanaians who rely on Free SHS for their children’s future.
THE NDC’S TRUE INTENTIONS EXPOSED
Mr Nketia’s comments confirm what we have always known: the NDC has no regard for a policy that has transformed lives. While former President John Mahama flip-flops on whether he will continue Free SHS, Mr Nketia’s outburst lays bare the NDC’s hidden agenda. Ghanaians must note that a vote for the NDC is against education for the poor and vulnerable.
THE IMPORTANCE OF FREE SHS
Free SHS is not just a policy—it is a lifeline for families across Ghana:
- Millions Benefiting: Over 1.6 million students have benefited from Free SHS, which has saved parents millions of cedis. Families no longer sell properties or go into debt to educate their children.
- Breaking Barriers: Children who never dreamt of entering secondary school now have access to quality education, breaking cycles of poverty in many communities.
- Nation-Building: Education is the backbone of every prosperous nation. Free SHS lays the foundation for a skilled, educated workforce to drive Ghana’s future.
MESSAGE TO THE NDC
Instead of providing solutions, Mr Nketia and the NDC attack a life-changing policy for cheap political points. Ghanaians deserve better than this backward thinking. We urge the NDC to state its position on Free SHS clearly. Will they continue this, or is this just another of their many lies?
AFAG stands with every family, student, and Ghanaian who has benefited from Free SHS. We will not allow the NDC to jeopardise our children's future. The Free SHS policy is here to stay, and Ghanaians must protect it by rejecting the NDC’s destructive agenda in 2024.
