President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Frank Serebour has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of alcoholism and drug abuse among some members of the association.
Speaking at the GMA’s annual general meeting, Dr. Serebour highlighted how these issues are negatively impacting the quality of life of healthcare professionals in Ghana.
He also addressed other serious concerns, including cases of sexual harassment within the healthcare sector, and called for a much-needed change in attitude and professionalism among the members.
“We have some health personnel who are involved in alcoholism, drug misuse and abuse, which affects the quality of their lives. There have been extreme circumstances reported, including cases of sexual harassment perpetuated by health workers, and yesterday, the medical dental council registrar, Doctor Divine told us that there are a lot of pending cases of sexual harassment before the council,” Dr. Serebour stated, raising alarm about the severity of these unprofessional conducts.
In his remarks, Dr. Serebour noted the legal repercussions health facilities face due to these issues, with several lawsuits already filed against healthcare facilities, often with unfavourable outcomes.
He pointed out that the profession's reputation is at risk due to the actions of a few bad nuts.
“There have been several legal suits against health facilities with outcomes not being favourable to us as health workers. Indeed, sometimes we are left off the hook simply because the victims of unprofessionalism choose to blame the witches and the wizards for their predicament instead of taking on the system,” he said, stressing the need for accountability and introspection among members.
Dr. Serebour’s call to action urges all members of the GMA to reflect on their behaviour and embrace the high standards of professionalism expected in the medical field.
His message aims to remind healthcare professionals that their actions have a direct impact on the trust and well-being of the public and that they must uphold the integrity of the profession.
