Dr. Frank Serebour, the President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has strongly criticized some of the association's members for their unprofessional conduct, particularly their lack of commitment to their work.

Speaking at the GMA’s annual general meeting, Dr. Serebour expressed his frustration with the growing issue of laziness among certain medical professionals, which he claims is affecting the quality of healthcare delivery.

Dr. Serebour’s remarks centered around the habit of some medical staff who show up for work at 9 a.m., only to leave by 12 noon, expecting to be paid for a full day’s work.

He condemned this lack of dedication and commitment to patient care, which he said undermines the professionalism of the health sector.

“Is there professionalism in the health sector dwindling? Is there so much focus on greed and selfishness? Recently, the junior doctors are holding various forums and they are indicating that we are bullying them. Is it true? But at least all of us can attest to the escalation of lateness to duty, absenteeism, poor documentation and also not dedicating enough time to our employers. People walk into the hospital at nine by 12, they are working out. We ask them, they say they are done yet they expect to be paid for working eight hours at least in a day,” Dr. Frank Serebour said, voicing his concerns about the current state of the profession.

The GMA President emphasizes the importance of professionalism and discipline in healthcare.

He urged members who engage in such behaviour to reflect on their actions and make a conscious effort to change, stressing that a lack of dedication harms not only the reputation of the healthcare system but also the quality of care patients receive.
