Susan Bonney calls for innovation, community engagement, and global vision at LDTP 2024

Programs Management and Budget Coordinator at USAID Ghana, Susan Bonney has urged young people to embrace leadership through innovation, emotional intelligence, and community engagement to create lasting positive change.

She made the call while delivering the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Accra edition of the Leadership Diary Training Program (LDTP).

“The theme, Youth for the prosperity of Africa: Established, Equipped and Engaged is particularly timely and relevant as we navigate the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century,” Madam Bonney stated.

She emphasized the importance of equipping young leaders with essential skills to thrive in an increasingly complex world. Leadership, according to Madam Bonney, requires adaptability and solution-oriented thinking to address both local and global challenges effectively.

Highlighting key leadership competencies, Madam Bonney stressed the significance of emotional intelligence, creativity, and inspiration.

“The journey towards leadership begins with innovation, emotional intelligence, and leadership through inspiration,” she noted. Madam Bonney explained that these qualities enable young leaders to inspire others and navigate challenges with confidence.

She also emphasized the importance of active community involvement. “We must actively engage in our communities and societies, working towards positive change,” she said. She reminded participants that leadership extends beyond individual success, urging them to focus on collective efforts that benefit society as a whole.

In addition to local engagement, Bonney encouraged the participants to adopt a global outlook. “As a global citizen, develop a global perspective and contribute to international development efforts,” she advised. Bonney challenged the youth not to limit their ambitions. “Never see yourself as just a local person—make sure you aspire to develop your circle,” she added, emphasizing the importance of expanding personal and professional networks.

Madam Bonney concluded by calling on the youth to play an active role in shaping Africa’s future. “You are the future of not just Ghana but Africa. By equipping yourselves with the necessary skills and engaging in your communities, you can play a vital role in driving the continent’s prosperity. Let us seize the opportunities ahead and work together to build a better future for ourselves and generations to come,” she said, leaving participants motivated to maximize their potential.
