The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, has called on Ghanaians to reject political leaders who rely on borrowing to govern the country.
According to Dr. Kwakye, Ghana possesses sufficient natural resources to fuel the country's progress without resorting to external loans and aid.
“Ghanaians must reject leaders with a borrowing mindset. We have enough resources here at home. We don’t need to go out and borrow. We should accept only leaders prepared to enable Ghana to derive maximum benefit from its natural resource wealth,” Dr. Kwakye emphasised in a post on X.
He stressed that Ghana’s development should be driven by leaders who prioritise the effective utilisation of the country's wealth rather than accumulating debt, which could burden future generations.
In another post, Dr. Kwakye outlined several critical factors he believes Ghanaians should consider when selecting leaders in the upcoming December 7 election.
He highlighted the importance of scrutinising candidates based on their stance on key issues such as the state of the economy, illegal mining (galamsey), corruption, nepotism, cronyism, LGBTQ+ rights, and the sustainability of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program.
Dr. Kwakye's call comes as the political atmosphere intensifies ahead of the 2024 general election. His remarks aim to encourage voters to prioritise candidates who demonstrate a commitment to resource-driven development and who have a clear plan to tackle critical national issues.
