In a bold and direct statement, Nana Asumagyahene Otumfuo’s Benkumhene, Odeneho Okyere Kusi Ntrama has assured Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of the support of the residents of Bosomtwi in the upcoming December 7 elections.
However, the chief made it clear that his community’s allegiance comes with conditions that the government must address.
Speaking candidly, Odeneho Kusi Ntrama expressed grave concern over the escalating issue of illegal mining activities in the region, particularly the threat these pose to the pristine waters of Lake Bosomtwi.
Known as one of Ghana’s most treasured lakes, Lake Bosomtwi is not only a vital water source but also a significant cultural and ecological landmark. The chief warned that he would not stand idly by if these activities, which have already wreaked havoc in nearby areas like Amansie, continued to affect the lake.
“I am giving my word to Dr. Bawumia that we will stand by the NPP in this election, but not without a clear commitment from the government. If the illegal mining continues to threaten our lake, I will not remain silent,” Odeneho Kusi Ntrama stated. His message was firm, emphasizing the need for action over words.
The chief pointed out that the residents of Bosomtwi are not just concerned about the protection of the environment, but also about infrastructural development in the area.
Specifically, he highlighted the urgent need for the completion of the road connecting Kuntunase and Nyameni Nkwanta. This road project, which has long been promised, is crucial for enhancing connectivity in the region, boosting trade and improving the overall quality of life for residents.
“We are aware you and your team are here to seek our votes, and we have listened. But there must be tangible results.
"The road between Kuntunase and Nyameni Nkwanta is a priority for us, and we expect that the government will fulfil its promise,” Odeneho Kusi Ntrama said, stressing that these demands are non-negotiable.
He further suggested that a formal commitment from the government could take the form of a traditional libation, a ceremonial practice that holds deep significance in many Ghanaian cultures, symbolizing a promise or oath.
The chief implied that such a gesture would demonstrate the government’s seriousness about addressing the concerns of the Bosomtwi people.
“As we move closer to election day, let this be clear: we are willing to support the NPP, but we need to see the commitment to protect our environment and develop our infrastructure,” Odeneho Kusi Ntrama concluded.
