The National Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has asserted that the outcomes of U.S. elections no longer correlate with electoral results in Ghana.
The NDC spokesperson shared this view during a discussion on JoyNews’ Newsfile program on Saturday, November 9, highlighting a shift in the once-paralleled patterns between the two countries.
Discussing the history of Ghana’s electoral outcomes alongside those of the United States, Sammy Gyamfi noted that in previous election cycles, regime changes in the U.S. were often reflected in Ghana.
“In times past, Ghana used to have a very striking resemblance or a common feature that we shared with the USA in terms of regime change, and anytime Americans voted for change, we also saw change in Ghana,” he explained.
However, he believes this pattern was disrupted in the 2020 elections, when the United States saw a shift in leadership with President Joe Biden’s victory over former President Donald Trump, yet Ghana maintained continuity with the re-election of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
“I have said that the fact Donald Trump won an election in the U.S. does not necessarily mean Party A or Party B will win in Ghana,” he stated.
He emphasized that electoral outcomes are primarily determined by national issues rather than symbolic parallels between nations.
“I am not one of those who think that the fact that Trump won an election means that NPP or NDC will win. The U.S. election was not a contest of symbols but a contest premised on critical issues,” he contended.
