Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin has firmly refused to relinquish his majority seat to the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, amid rising tensions in Parliament.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs boycotted Parliament on Thursday, November 7, when the Minority Caucus reoccupied the seats typically reserved for the majority.
This led Speaker Alban Bagbin to indefinitely suspend the House proceedings for a second time.
In an interview on Peace FM’s "Kokrokoo" morning show, Afenyo-Markin emphasised that he will not compromise on his position in Parliament, asserting, "I will never go and sit there. Never!"
He noted the symbolic significance of seating arrangements, noting, "It has symbolic significance to sit to the right as the majority. Majority doesn’t sit to the left of the Speaker—that’s the practice and convention."
Afenyo-Markin urges Speaker Bagbin to restore order by directing the Minority members to return to their designated seats.
"If seating does not matter, why have they moved from their seats to ours?" he questioned, “Enough of the conspiracy.”
With the House unable to conduct official business, Afenyo-Markin reiterated the importance of parliamentary conventions, making it clear that the Majority will stand firm in maintaining their position in the House.
