Member of Parliament for Ellembelle in the Western region and Deputy Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo’s recent unveiling of a statue of himself at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region.
In a social media post on Thursday, November 7, Armah-Kofi Buah described the monument as a “self-serving display” that overlooks the region’s real needs.
“President Akufo-Addo’s unveiling of a statue of himself at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital raises serious questions about his priorities and commitment to the people of the Western Region,” he wrote.
He argued that the monument is an extravagant and unnecessary gesture, particularly in a region he claims has suffered from neglect under the current administration.
“This grandiose gesture is a misplaced priority,” he asserted, adding, “The people of the Western Region deserve better than these self-serving displays.”
The lawmaker pointed to pressing issues in the region, including inadequate healthcare facilities, poor road networks, and high unemployment rates, which he believes should be addressed before investing in statues or other symbolic gestures.
According to the NDC MP, the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government has consistently taken the Western Region for granted.
“This extravagant display of self-aggrandizement comes at a time when the region has been largely neglected, with pressing needs and concerns left unaddressed,” he said.
The post continued. “The Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-NPP government continues to take the Western Region for granted.”
