Former Akwatia Member of Parliament (MP) Baba Jamal has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was optimistic about Donald Trump’s success in the U.S. elections, pointing to policy similarities between Trump and the NDC.
In an interview on Okay FM, Mr. Jamal remarked that Trump's conservative views on issues like abortion and same-sex marriage align closely with the values championed by NDC presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama.
He emphasized that, unlike the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which he suggests has been more accommodating of progressive ideas, the NDC firmly opposes these policies.
"We knew Trump was going to win because, when you listen to his policies, you will see they mirror those we [NDC] have promoted here in Ghana," he said.
He added, "Trump stands against abortion and homosexuality, issues our candidate also opposes. Unlike the NPP, which has suggested acceptance of some of these ideas, the NDC remains firm on our stance."
Jamal interprets Trump's expected victory as a validation of conservative values, suggesting it may signal a similar outcome in Ghana’s upcoming December 7 elections.
He further described Trump’s return as a form of “sankofa,” meaning a return to one’s roots, something the NDC hopes to replicate.
The U.S. elections, still awaiting formal results, currently show Trump in a favorable lead against Vice President Kamala Harris, after securing critical battleground states like Pennsylvania and Georgia.
