Prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has become the subject of social media backlash following his commentary on the ongoing United States (US) elections.

His remarks drew comparisons between the American and Ghana presidential elections, highlighting similarities in candidates’ backgrounds.

Otchere-Darko noted the resemblance between Kamala Harris’s run for president after serving as Vice President to Joe Biden, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s current bid to succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He also pointed out the similarities in Donald Trump’s attempt at reclaiming the U.S. presidency and former President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign to return to office.

In a post shared on November 5, 2024, Otchere-Darko recounted a CNN segment in which a first-time voter expressed her support for Kamala Harris as a symbol of change rather than Trump.

“I just listened to this first time American voter on CNN live and when she was asked how she voted, she answered, “I voted for change… I voted for Kamala Harris!” For her, Trump, who is seeking a delayed second term, does not represent change! A very interesting perspective," he wrote.

But Otchere-Darko’s tweet was met with criticism, as many social media users mocked him, suggesting Harris’s expected loss mirrors what they foresee for Dr. Bawumia in Ghana’s election.
