The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will hold a press conference on Wednesday, November 6, to address recent developments in Parliament as well as broader issues impacting Ghana’s democratic framework.

This briefing, set to take place at the Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium in Parliament House at 2:00 pm, offers a platform for the Speaker to provide critical updates on parliamentary matters amid a period of heightened political activity.

“This engagement aims to provide an opportunity for the media to discuss critical issues affecting Ghana’s parliamentary democracy, including recent events that have led to significant political developments,” a statement from Parliament noted.

One of the pressing matters likely to be discussed is the ongoing dispute over the declaration of four seats vacant.

On October 17, Speaker Bagbin, citing Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution, declared the seats of four Members of Parliament vacant—a decision the Supreme Court suspended.

These MPs, initially representing specific political parties, had filed nominations to run in the upcoming elections on different tickets, which the Speaker deemed a violation of their original mandate.

This decision has had a significant impact on the parliamentary composition, reducing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) seats from 137 plus an independent MP to 135.

This left the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) with 136 seats, allowing them to hold a slight majority.
