The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has refuted social media claims suggesting that the 16-year-old suspect involved in the East Legon accident, which tragically claimed two lives, is not being held at the Osu Correctional Centre as directed by the court.
According to the Police, the teenage son of popular preacher Salifu Amoako was indeed taken to the Osu Correctional Centre following a court order issued on November 1, 2024, and remains there in detention.
The Police clarified that these social media claims are false and cautioned that publishing such misinformation constitutes an offence under Section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which addresses the spread of false news.
As part of their investigations, the Police have identified two accounts associated with the false information: a TikTok user with the handle “prisywanlov1” and a Facebook user named “EmpressPapa A-Amigos.”
Authorities are currently working to uncover the identities of those behind these accounts to pursue appropriate legal action.
Expressing concern over the misuse of a tragic event, the Police said, “We find it deeply unfortunate that some individuals are using this situation in an unGhanaian manner to draw attention to themselves.”
They urged the public to refrain from spreading false information and allow the affected families the space to mourn in peace.
