The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has expressed surprise at the messaging coming from the campaign team of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 election.

According to him, the tone and content of Dr. Bawumia's campaign make it seem as though the outgoing President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been an ineffective leader.

As President Akufo-Addo nears the end of his second term, he prepares to leave office on January 7, 2025, with his Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, stepping up as the NPP's candidate for the upcoming election.

The campaign has focused on Bawumia’s promise of “bold solutions” and his vision for revitalising Ghana’s economy to ease hardships faced by citizens.

Dr. Bawumia’s team emphasises his fresh approach and ideas, often framing him as the solution to Ghana’s current challenges.

Reflecting on this rhetoric, Sulemana Braimah took to X (formerly Twitter) to question if these campaign promises inadvertently critique President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

“You listen to Bawumia's team and they make you feel Akufo-Addo has been a terrible leader. ‘We need a leader with bold solutions,’ ‘We need a visionary leader,’ ‘We need a leader with great ideas’… Does it mean Nana doesn't have all these and that's why we are where we are?” Mr. Braimah wrote.

Braimah’s comments raise questions about whether the campaign's emphasis on new leadership and innovative solutions might cast an unintended shadow on the President's legacy.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his campaign teams believes his message resonates with Ghanaians and have been acepted by the electorates who will vote to make him president on December 7.
