Senior Researcher Prof. Smart Sarpong has voiced his disapproval over recent actions taken by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin regarding his ongoing dispute with the Supreme Court.
Prof. Sarpong criticized the Speaker’s stance after the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal to overturn a ruling that suspended his declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
The Speaker’s legal team initially argued that the court lacked jurisdiction and referenced constitutional immunity under Article 117, prompting him to return court documents served by the bailiffs.
Despite this argument, the Supreme Court ruled against his application, with the Chief Justice stating that the grounds for the appeal “have no merit.”
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show, Prof. Sarpong questioned the Speaker’s stance and called on him to hold his privilege in check, saying, "Which of the Members of Parliament, including senior Bagbin, is more Ghanaian than someone else?
“It is a privilege that you have; only a few people can be Speakers until the world comes to an end. You are not more Ghanaian than any person.”
Prof. Sarpong reiterated the principle of equality, reminding the Speaker and Parliament that power should not be equated to superiority over others.
“God created us the same and we will die the same,” he concluded.
