The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation has issued an alert to the public, especially prospective applicants of its scholarship program, urging them not to pay any fees or charges to third parties claiming to facilitate the scholarship process.
In a public notice on Tuesday, November 5, the GNPC Foundation disclosed that some fraudulent individuals have been soliciting money from unsuspecting students and their families under the guise of assisting with securing GNPC scholarships.
The Foundation’s management, however, clarified that the scholarship is completely free for all eligible Ghanaian students.
“Absolutely nothing is requested from scholarship applicants to merit the scholarship facility,” stated the GNPC Foundation, emphasizing that applicants should not pay or offer any form of incentive for admission into the program.
The GNPC Foundation, which provides financial assistance to needy but brilliant Ghanaian students pursuing tertiary education, highlighted that attempts to exploit applicants not only undermine the integrity of the scholarship program but also violate Ghanaian law.
“The general public is hereby cautioned not to engage these deceitful persons soliciting or demanding for money ostensibly to provide them with GNPC scholarships,” the statement continued.
The Foundation further reminded Ghanaians that solicitation of funds for the scholarship program could amount to serious criminal offenses, including “Personation, Extortion, and Defrauding by False Pretence” under Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to the Foundation, security agencies are actively investigating the fraudulent activities and will pursue legal action against those found culpable.
“The appropriate security agencies are investigating the matter to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to book,” assured GNPC Foundation management.
