Tensions escalated between members of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) and Hapag Lloyd Ghana Limited Country Manager, Robert Oram after he allegedly refused to accept a petition in the presence of the media.

This incident occurred during a picket at various shipping lines in Tema, including Hapag Lloyd Ghana Limited, over what the freight forwarders described as exploitative port charges.

The Freight forwarders renewed their protests to emphasise their demands at several shipping lines in Tema, following a previous demonstration on September 24, 2024.

After issuing a 14-day ultimatum to the shipping lines and dissatisfied with their responses, the group staged a picket at shipping companies like Arkas Ghana Limited and Hapag Lloyd Ghana Limited.

Instead of presenting their petition to a representative, the group insisted on meeting with the Country Manager of Hapag Lloyd directly.

After the group persisted in their demands, the Country Manager of Hapag Lloyd eventually met with the freight forwarders but declined to engage due to the media’s presence.

Stephen Adjokatcher, President of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF), reaffirmed their commitment to advocate for more favourable business conditions at the ports.

In a related development, the Institute announced plans at an earlier press conference to closely monitor the operations of the Ghana Shippers Authority following the enactment of its new law.
