Former President John Mahama has urged Ghanaians to vote decisively against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December polls.
He contends that life under his administration was far better than the hardships experienced under President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia who promised Ghanaians heaven on earth.
Addressing a rally in Tamale Central as part of his Northern Region campaign tour, Mahama described the election as a crucial between the current government and the welfare of the people, rather than a traditional NDC-NPP rivalry.
"In Tamale Central, we got 60.8% last time. This year, we need to raise that to over 75-80% because this election is between the whole of Ghana and the NPP; it’s not just NDC and NPP,” he asserted.
Mahama criticized the current administration for what he described as severe economic hardships, claiming that essential services like healthcare and education have deteriorated.
“The country I handed over on January 7, 2017, is not the same Ghana we’re living in now,” he said. “I can beat my chest and say that our lives were far better under the NDC. Today, everyone is feeling the hardship."
“They came with very sweet words and convinced Ghanaians that they were going to be a better government. Today, everything has gone backwards; the quality of our education is a problem, the quality of healthcare is a problem,” he added.
He referenced declining healthcare quality, saying, "If you don’t have money today, you might not survive a hospital visit.”
He also mentioned that “promises by the NPP to improve living standards had instead led to worsening conditions across sectors.”
Wrapping up his Northern Region tour, Mahama pledged to initiate critical infrastructure projects if elected, including the Tamale Water Expansion Project and a bridge over the White Volta at Daboya to connect the Tolon District to the Savannah Region.
