Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to restore true media freedom in Ghana if elected in the upcoming December 2024 elections.
In a speech delivered at a governance forum, he underscored the need for a free press, emphasizing the pivotal role media freedom plays in strengthening democracy and accountability.
Reflecting on the current state of press freedom in Ghana, Mahama lamented the increasing challenges faced by journalists and media houses, which he attributed to a restrictive environment under the current administration.
“Journalists will not remain in constant fear over state-sponsored attacks on them,” Mahama stated, promising a departure from what he described as a climate of intimidation.
He criticized recent government actions, such as the closure of radio stations critical of the government, and assured that his administration would protect journalists from retaliation.
“Radio stations critical of the government will not be closed. Journalists will not fear being attacked to the point that some have to seek asylum in other countries,” he affirmed.
To facilitate a free and safe environment for journalists, Mahama committed to fully implementing and operationalizing the Right to Information Act, passed in 2019.
“We are determined to pass the Broadcasting Bill into law, reactivate the Media Development Fund in consultation with the GJA [Ghana Journalists Association], and support the growth and economic viability of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and other state-owned media outfits,” he added, outlining a comprehensive plan for bolstering media independence,” said the NDC flagbearer.
Mahama’s speech also touched on other measures aimed at protecting the rights and freedoms of journalists.
He expressed his intention to re-open the investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale and to ensure prompt action on all cases involving violations against media professionals.
“To promote and guarantee media freedom, expand the frontiers of press freedom, and create a conducive work environment for media practitioners, we will support the Ghana Journalists Association, National Media Commission, and other stakeholders,” Mahama pledged.
