Wildlife Deputy Minister calls for strict enforcement of Wildlife Resources Management Act
THU, 31 OCT 2024

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Akwasi Konadu, has urged regulatory institutions and stakeholders in the environmental and wildlife sectors to enforce the provisions of the Wildlife Resources Management Act, 2023 (Act 1115) rigorously.

He made the appeal during a stakeholders’ consultative dialogue organised in Accra on Wednesday.

Mr Konadu emphasised that strict enforcement of the Act would help preserve the country's wildlife resources for sustainable development.

“Given the crucial role wildlife plays in enhancing ecological balance, it is essential to protect it,” he stated.

He noted that it was important to keep actors in the wildlife space up-to-date with the new law.

The Deputy Minister explained that Act 1115 includes provisions on wildlife ownership, protected areas, management of wildlife outside these areas, licensing and permits, management of wildlife in captivity, international conventions and administrative regulations.

“This Act, which replaces the Wild Animals Preservation Act of 1961 (Act 43), consolidates and revises the laws related to wildlife and protected areas while providing for the implementation of international conventions on wildlife to which Ghana is a signatory,” he added.
